Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

“I will not let you go out, he said to himself, to the flames—not ever. And so he sat through a long part of the day, keeping the flames even, eating from his stock of raspberries, leaving to drink from the lake when he was thirsty. In the afternoon, toward the evening, with his face smeared and his skin red from the heat, he finally began to think ahead to what he needed to do.”

Question 1 (1 point)
How does this excerpt contribute to the theme of the novel?

a
Brian’s knowledge of what he can eat and drink shows that knowledge is the key to survival in the wild.
b
Brian’s organization in planning ahead shows that it is important to remain hopeful in desperate situations.
c
Brian's dedication to the fire shows that learning to persevere and not give up is necessary in overcoming a challenge.
d
Brian’s fear of losing the fire shows that being nervous in a desperate situation makes a person aware of his surroundings.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Explanation:

C i'm pretty sure don't quote me on it

Answer 2

Answer:

C:

When we use elimination, we immediately see that D, "Brian's fear of losing the fire shows that being nervous in a deseperate situation make a person aware of his surroundings." Of course, this is correct in other terms but the main idea of the story is definitely not the fact that Brian needs to be aware of his surroundings. It is something he does need to do, though, but this claim cannot be supported throughout the story. The same goes with A, and even B.

Do you think you’d be happier as an only child or as one of many brothers and sisters? What are the pros and cons of both? Write a 7 sentence response.

please be real with this

Answers

Answer:

I personally think that having siblings is better than being an only child. A few pros of having siblings is entertainment. You will never be bored when you have siblings you can always force them to do something with you. A con is that they steal your food, the only way that you can keep your  food safe is if you hide it and tell anyone that if they eat it that they will suffer. Another pro is that you can trick them into doing stuff for you, like if you don't want to a chore you can bribe siblings with literally anything and they will usally do it. Another con is that there are usally at  least one fight per week. But all and all I would not trade my siblings for anything, but don't tell them that.

Hope this is good.

Explanation:

Answer:

I think I would be happier as an only child. But, I say that because it is hard to get as many things as among many brothers and sisters. For parents it always an issue if they get something for one child they need to get something for all of them. So, one pro is being able to get more things, another pro is not having to fight with anyone, and the last pro is not having to share anything or getting hand-downs. Cons are not having anyone to play with, another con is not having someone to talk to when you get in trouble, and the last con is not having someone else to help you with homework when your parents aren't home. But, overall I think it would be interesting to live without brothers and sisters. I am grateful for what I do have so not all is lost.

How does this excerpt from the novel Hatchet support the theme of never giving up? Write a paragraph with a claim, evidence, and reasoning (R.A.C.E.)to answer the question.

Answers

Answer:

The hatchet supports the theme of never giving up quite well and in many ways. Brian never gave up on survival just as his parents never gave up on finding him. In order to survive Brian had to adapt to his new location and learn new skills. He taught himself how to spear fish and to start a fire as well as learn how to see birds despite their camouflage. However he also ran into many problems along the way like wildlife specifically a moose but the important thing is he never stopped striving for survival which is ultimately the reason he did in fact survive.

The hatchet effectively and in several ways emphasizes the notion of never giving up. Like his parents, Brian never lost up on finding a way to survive. Brian had to adjust to his new surroundings and pick up new abilities in order to live.

What is a Paragraph?

A paragraph is a self-contained section of writing that deals with a single concept or point (from the Ancient Greek o (parágraphos), "to write beside"). Although they are not needed by the orthographic norms of any language with a writing system, paragraphs are a common way to structure lengthy prose passages.

The earliest forms of classical British and Latin writing, which could be written in boustrophedon, had little to no space between words (alternating directions). The direction of text (left to right) is standardized throughout time.

Word separators and final punctuation became widespread. The initial means to break sentences into groups was the original paragraphos, equivalent to an underscore at the beginning of the next group. The Greek parágraphos developed into the pilcrow, which in English manuscripts in the Middle Ages may be observed placed inline between phrases.

Read the excerpt from We Shall Not Be Moved.

Everywhere in the garment district, by the front gates of little shops and big ones, picketers marched and sang. "O Dubinushka," they sang, and "Tortured and Enslaved," and other Russian folk and revolutionary airs. Icy rains poured down on them, some were in danger of frostbite — a winter of record-breaking cold had already begun — but there they were and there they stayed.

The union men were amazed. "There never was anything like it," one ILGWU official declared. "An equal number of men never would hold together under what these girls are enduring.”

How would a careful rereading of this excerpt help a reader understand who made up the ILGWU?

A.The reader could make a connection between the quote by one ILGWU official and the author’s reference to “union men” just before it.
B.The reader could make a connection between the quote by one ILGWU official and the reference to “these girls” in the same quote.
C.The reader could make a connection between the quote by one ILGWU official and the author’s description of “other Russian folk” in the first paragraph.
D.The reader could make a connection between the quote by one ILGWU official and the descriptive phrase “they sang” in the first paragraph.

Emma has been asked to write and reflect on the theme of law maintaining order in society. She is using this passage from The Jungle Book.

"Open those eyes, Little Brother! Shere Khan dares not kill thee in the jungle for fear of those that love thee; but remember, Akela is very old, and soon the day comes when he cannot kill his buck, and then he will be leader no more. Many of the wolves that looked thee over when thou wast brought to the Council first are old too, and the young wolves believe, as Shere Khan has taught them, that a man-cub has no place with the Pack. In a little time thou wilt be a man."

"And what is a man that he should not run with his brothers?" said Mowgli. "I was born in the jungle; I have obeyed the Law of the Jungle; and there is no wolf of ours from whose paws I have not pulled a thorn. Surely they are my brothers!"

Which writing sample is the best reflection of this important theme?

Good friends are an important part of life. Mowgli has been a great friend to his wolf brothers. His Pack will keep him safe.
It is best to quit while ahead in life. Akela has been a strong leader, but he is getting old and weak. It would be wise for Akela to leave the Pack.
Fitting in is hard to do. Mowgli is turning into a man as he grows. It will not be long before Mowgli has to leave the Pack.
When laws are not obeyed, society is not safe. Once Akela is gone, the Law of the Jungle may not be obeyed. Mowgli will be in danger of losing his life.
