Estuvo casada con el también pintor Diego Rivera con quien sostuvo una relación tormentosa y apasionada que los involucraba no solo con el arte sino, en la política de su tiempo. Frida, estuvo toda su vida signada por la enfermedad y el acecho de la muerte.

Durante su infancia, en 1913, sufrió de poliomielitis, dejándola una pierna más delgada que la otra. Esto, junto a las diferentes operaciones y procesos médicos que se llevaron a cabo con ella, terminaron dejando una profunda secuela en su ser. Asimismo, estos procesos la alejarían de disfrutar de una infancia común y corriente, y a menudo llena de soledad, lo cual puede ser visto plasmado en muchos de sus cuadros.

Aún así pudo sobreponerse a una vida limitada de motricidad independiente, pero no de imaginación y creatividad. Frida es un personaje con una vida llena de dolor y misterio que fue plasmada en sus pinturas en donde el autorretrato es su principal motivo. Aunque mucha de su vida era plasmada en sus cuadros, estos no llegaron a tener relevancia dentro del mundo artístico, al punto de alcanzar la fama internacional, hasta después de su muerte, especialmente en los años 80.
