Diffrentiate between atoms and ions.

Answers

Answer 1
Hello. What is an Atom?
The smallest unit of matter. It is indivisible and consists of neutrons, electrons and protons. Atoms can take part in chemical reactions. Combination of atoms together forms molecule. Always the number of protons and electrons are equal. Independent life may or may not be feasible within a solution. Nucleus of the atom is formed by protons and neutrons. Surrounding the nucleus are the electrons.

What is an Ion?
Atoms where the electrons and protons are not equal are called ions. Ions are charged particles. They can be either positively charged ions or negatively charged ions. If an atom is charged electrically it is considered an ion. If an atom contains maximum number of electrons than protons, then it is called anion. If an atom contains maximum number of protons than electrons, then it is called cation. Independent existence in a solution. When an atom gains or loses electrons, ion is formed. Hope it helps

Is this statement true or false? Why?
Chemical reactions are nothing more than rearrangements of protons.

Answers

Answer:

False. Answer in pic above

In fact protons have no role in chemical reactions. The regrouping of atoms itself forms the new products in chemical reactions. The reactions involves the loss/gain or sharing of electrons.

What is a chemical reaction ?

A chemical reaction is a chemical change in which two or more atoms combine together to form a new product or a compound decomposes to form its constituent compounds. This  involves breaking or making of bonds.

In a chemical reaction, no change occurs in the nuclear composition but the valence electrons are involved in the reaction. Atoms loss or gain electrons or share valence electrons with other atoms to form ne compounds.

The electrostatic force of attraction or the overlapping of atomic orbitals make the new products in a chemical reaction. Hence, the statement is false.

Which best represents a particle containing 28 protons, 26 electrons, and 34 neutrons?
A Fe2-
B
54
2+
28N;
C%2Fe2-
DSNi2+

Answers

Answer:

Ni^2+

Explanation:

The following data were obtained from the question:

Proton = 28

Electron = 26

Neutron = 34

Next, we shall determine the atomic number of the element.

Atomic number of an element is simply defined as the number of protons in the atom of an element.

Thus,

Atomic number = proton number

Proton = 28

Atomic number = proton number = 28

Atomic number = 28

Therefore, the element is Nickel since no two elements have the same atomic number.

Finally, we shall determine the charge on the Nickel atom as follow:

Proton = 28

Electron = 26

Charge on atom =

Charge on atom = Proton – Electron

Charge on atom = 28 – 26

Charge on atom = +2

Therefore, we can represent the Particle as Ni^2+

The compound M-O-H can act both as acid or base depending upon the ionisation

periodic table.
action

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

A compound that can act both as an acid and a base is called an amphoteric substance. A good example (based on the question) of an amphoteric substance is the Aluminium hydroxide [Al(OH)₃] where Aluminium is the "M" in M-O-H. Aluminium is in the third period of the periodic table. The reaction below shows aluminium can act both as an acid and as a base in different neutralization reactions.

As an acid

Al(OH)₃ + 3NaOH ⇒ Na₃AlO₃ + 3H₂O

As a base

3HCl + Al(OH)₃ ⇒ AlCl₃ + 3H₂O

NOTE: A neutralization reaction is a reaction between an acid and a base to give you salt and water

The answer is ice water, since the particles of a solid have very low kinetic energy.

Explanation:

Answer:

Iced water.

Explanation:

It's a solid. Within a given substance, such as water, particles in the solid state have the least amount of kinetic energy.

As water freezes, it does so because after thermal energy leaves the particles, the average translational+rotational kinetic energy decreases, but the total average kinetic energy does not... and the temperature does not change either.

What is combustion reaction?

Comubustion reactions are those reactions in which organic compound get burnt in the presence of oxygen for the formation of carbon dioxide gas and water molecule.

If the food sample contains the organic compound then it will convert into water and carbon dioxide gas and if it contains the matter in the form of inorganic compounds then it will convert into another product but having the same mass.

Hence if matter of food sample is burned then it will convert into small products as a result of physical or chemical change.

Which best explains how photosynthesis is helpful to humans? It reduces the amount of harmful rays released by the sun. It increases the levels of carbon dioxide in the air. It provides oxygen for humans to breathe. It produces proteins, which humans can eat.

Answers

Answer:

it provides oxygen for the human to breathe

Explanation:

During photosynthesis plants absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen into the air. Hence, it increases the level of oxygen for breath.

What is photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is a biological process by which green plants produce energy and molecular oxygen in leaf by the aid of light energy. The photoactive pigments chlorophyll in green leaves absorbs light energy sufficient for this process.

The photosynthetic reaction involves combination of carbon dioxide and water to form glucose and oxygen as written below:

[tex]\rm 6H_{2}O + 6CO_{2} \rightarrow C_{6}H_{12}O_{6} + 6O_{2}[/tex].

Therefore, photosynthesis decrease the level of carbon dioxide and increase the level of oxygen in the air . Thus, plant biomass helps us to provide oxygen to breath.

Compare which element would have larger first ionization energy: an alkali metal in Period 2 or an alkali metal in Period 4?

AW: I think it would be alkali metal on period 2

Answers

Answer:

An alkali metal present in period 2 have larger first ionization energy.

Explanation:

Ionization energy:

The amount of energy required to remove the electron from the atom is called ionization energy.

Trend along period:

As we move from left to right across the periodic table the number of valance electrons in an atom increase. The atomic size tend to decrease in same period of periodic table because the electrons are added with in the same shell. When the electron are added, at the same time protons are also added in the nucleus. The positive charge is going to increase and this charge is greater in effect than the charge of electrons. This effect lead to the greater nuclear attraction. The electrons are pull towards the nucleus and valance shell get closer to the nucleus. As a result of this greater nuclear attraction atomic radius decreases and ionization energy increases because it is very difficult to remove the electron from atom and more energy is required.

Trend along group:

As we move down the group atomic radii increased with increase of atomic number. The addition of electron in next level cause the atomic radii to increased. The hold of nucleus on valance shell become weaker because of shielding of electrons thus size of atom increased.

As the size of atom increases the ionization energy from top to bottom also  decreases because it becomes easier to remove the electron because of less nuclear attraction and as more electrons are added the outer electrons becomes more shielded and away from nucleus.  Thus alkali metal present in period 2 have larger ionization energy because of more nuclear attraction as compared to the alkali metal present in period 4.
