Critical Thinking: Make Inferences Spartacus’s
rebellion had an impact on Roman history. Use
the Internet to learn more about it. Then write an
essay evaluating how one person can affect the
course of history, using Spartacus as an example.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:  Spartacus was a Thracian, and he had once fought with the Romans. According to Plutarch, he was enslaved by them after he had deserted. He was trained as a gladiator but due to his strength and combat skater.

In 73BC, he plotted an escape from his gladiatorial school near Capua in southern Italy. He was joined in the conspiracy by up to 100 other gladiators.

The plot was discovered, and only 50 of the gladiators escaped. The escapees elected Spartacus and Crixus a Gaul as their leaders.Spartacus emerged as the leader of the slaves, but other commanders were essential to the revolt. Spartacus and his men established a camp on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in the south of Italy.

The Romans sent two armed expeditions to subdue the ex-gladiators and end the rebellion. The ex-gladiators who by now have been joined by other escaped slaves were a formidable force. Under the leadership of Spartacus, they managed to defeat both Roman expeditions. The rebels were fortunate because many Roman legions were engaged in the war against Mithridates. Their success against the two Roman forces led to even more slaves joining their ranks.

There is some speculation that the slaves split into two groups, one commanded by Spartacus and the other by Crixus. In 72 BCE, the slaves defeated a force of praetorian guards under the command of two consuls. This defeat caused panic in Rome, and many expected Spartacus to march on the city.

Instead, Spartacus marched to the south to search for loot. When they did march towards Roman again, they defeated another Roman force. Crassus, one of Rome's leading figures and probably the richest, offered his service to the Senate. He raised several legions and advanced upon Spartacus and his rebel army.

Crassus was a shrewd tactician, and he engaged the slaves in several small encounters, which he won. He forces Spartacus to retreat further south, into the ‘Toe’ of Italy. By 71 BC, the former were encamped by the Strait of Messina. Plutarch states that Spartacus planned to ferry his army to Sicily. However, he was unable to secure the necessary ships.

Why did most African Americans support U.S. participation in World War II?

Answers

African-American soldiers noted the irony and hypocrisy of fighting for freedom and democracy in Europe when they could not enjoy those same privileges in their own country. This sentiment led to the Double V campaign which worked to end discrimination at home and ensure democracy abroad. At home this movement was maintained by discrimination in the defense industries and labor unions; racist housing practices were also noted and attempts to change these were part of the Double V campaign. African-American rights were directly tied to European emancipation.

. Give the three dates when advancements were made in transportation. _____________________________

Answers

Answer:The transportation revolution in the United States began when Americans taking advantage of features of the natural environment to move people and things from place to place began searching for ways to make transport cheaper, faster, and more efficient. Over time a series of technological changes allowed transportation to advance to the point where machines have effectively conquered distance. People can almost effortlessly travel to anywhere in the world and can inexpensively ship raw materials and products across a global market.

But this technology is not ubiquitous, and it is not necessarily democratic. As a famous science fiction writer once said, the future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed. Modern transportation infrastructure is controlled to a great extent by large corporations, but the benefits of transport are depended on by everyone. And transportation technology itself requires specific conditions such as abundant, cheap, portable energy in the form of fossil fuels, and public infrastructure created by our own and foreign governments, that even those large corporations depend upon but don’t control.

When we think of transportation, it is natural to think first about going places. Getting on a plane in one hemisphere and getting off on the other side of the world is a life-changing opportunity which was unavailable to most people as little as a generation ago, and unthinkable two generations ago. But more crucial to our daily lives than the freedom offered by world travel is the cargo from the other side of the world that reaches us quickly in the holds of jets and more slowly but in almost unimaginable volume in containers on ships. The global transportation of foods, raw materials, and finished goods goes virtually unnoticed in our daily lives, but makes our contemporaryconsumer lifestyle possible.

Answer:

Summary of Social Indicators: in 2019, proportion of poor people falls to 24.7% but extreme poverty still reaches 6.5% of the population

Section: Social Statistics

November 12, 2020 10h00 AM | Last Updated: November 30, 2020 05h53 PM

The results are based on data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey from 2012 to 2019, among other sources.

From 2018 to 2019, poverty measured by the $5.5 purchasing power parity (PPP) line fell from 25.3% to 24.7% of the population. Extreme poverty (US$ 1.90 PPP) remained at 6.5% of the population, in 2018 and in 2019, affecting more than half of the Northeast and 39.8% of black or brown women.

The Gini index (0.543) fell compared to 2018 (0.545), but the country is the ninth most unequal in the world according to the World Bank is the ninth in the world with the highest inequality level according to the World Bank.

Between 2018 and 2019, the unemployment rate fell from 12% to 11.7%. However, the proportion of unemployed population for at least two years rose from 23.5% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2019.

Among young people aged 15 to 29 years, 22.1% did not study and were not employed in 2019. The percentage was lower than that of 2018, due to the increase in the employment-to-population ratio.

In 2019, the states of the Northeast had more than ¼ of young people aged 15 to 29 who neither studied nor were employed, a pattern seen in the series started in 2016.

Among black or brown women aged 15 to 29 years, 32.0% did not study and had no employment in 2019, a proportion 2.4 times higher than that of young white people in the same situation (13.2%).

In 2018, according to Caged, more than 71 thousand hirings occurred intermittently in the country, representing 0.5% of admissions with a formal contract. In 2019, there were more than 155 thousand hires in this intermittent way, or 1.0% of admissions with formal contract.

Four out of ten employed workers were informal in 2019. Informality in the Brazilian labor market, of a structural nature, reached 41.6% of the country's workers in 2019, or 39.3 million persons. This indicator remained stable in relation to 2018. The proportion was higher in the North (61.6%) and lower in the South (29.1%).

Among the employed persons with no education or with incomplete primary education, the proportion of informal workers was 62.4%, but only 21.9% among those had complete higher education.

In 2019, the gross school attendance rate of children aged 0 to 3 years reached 35.6% and, in the group aged 4 and 5, it reached 92.9%, but it is still below the goals of the National Education Plan ( 50% for children aged 0 to 3 and universalization for those aged 4 and 5

Answer (2)

Explaining Kennedy’s sudden passing accelerated an argument about a constitutional change that had been in the works in Congress in 1963.

Technically, the Constitution never spelled out how a vice president would become president if a president died, resigned or was unable to perform the office’s duty.

This oversight became apparent in 1841, when the newly elected President, William Henry Harrison, died about a month after becoming President. Vice President John Tyler, in a bold move, settled the political debate about succession.
