The date was 12th march 2020.I was coming back from writing my end-of-term exams when my mom broke the news to me: “The first case of the corona virus has been identified here in Kenya; I don’t think there’ll be an exam tomorrow. The government has ordered a lockdown and we have to stay at home." At first, I didn’t take this seriously but little did I know that my whole life was about to go down the primrose path! I couldn’t go to school, I couldn't go to the mall - or anywhere else for that matter. Unfortunately, I wouldn't see my friends for a year and a half. About a week later, my parents received an email from school saying that we would attend online lessons from eight o’clock in the morning to three o’clock in the afternoon. At first, this was a scary experience as I had never been on a video call on the platform so there was no way of telling if my camera was on or off or if my microphone was muted or unmuted. After about a week or two of attending online lessons, I got more comfortable with it and soon got used to it. Also needed new equipment because my back started hurting and I got other types of illness. Ever since I started online school, I would be waiting for the day that the government would announce that the lockdown was over but they kept postponing it until the situation was more controllable. Weeks passed and we were still stuck at home with nothing to do. This was frustrating because I was used to getting up early and going to school. However, things were not so bad after all. I could wake up late now because I did not have to worry about changing into a school uniform or the time taken to travel from home to school and back. This also meant that I could have more leisure time because as soon as school was over I could finish all my work. I got used to it faster than everyone because I was especially good at ict. even though I was used to it now, there was a problem …boredom. I was just not used to sitting in front of a computer screen for long. I would feel itchy sitting on my chair and start moving around. My legs would hurt because of low blood circulation and I would also get “pins and needles” quite often. As time passed, I realized I was gaining weight and it was not healthy. Back when I used to go to school, I used to move a lot, which meant I was constantly burning fat but now I was stuck at home and could barely do anything. This was easily fixed when my dad bought a few gym equipment, which I could use to keep myself fit. Phone calls and FaceTime kept me connected with my friends. Even though it was not as good as meeting them in person, it was better than nothing. This kept going for about a year until finally, the government released the lock down and we met in school shortly after that. I will never forget this experience.

I didn't take it seriously at first, but little did I realize that my entire life was about to take a turn for the worse! I couldn't go to school, the mall, or anywhere else. I wasn't going to see my friends for another year and a half.My parents received an email from school about a week later informing them that we would be attending online sessions beginning at 8:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. This was a stressful experience at first, since I had never been on a video call on the platform before, so I had no idea if my camera was turned on or off, or whether my microphone was muted or not. After a week or two of taking online sessions, I felt more at ease and quickly became accustomed to it. I also need new equipment since my back began to suffer and I became unwell in various ways. I'd been waiting for the day the government would declare that the lock down was lifted since I started online school, but they kept putting it off until the situation was more under control. We were still stranded at home with nothing to do after many weeks. This was readily remedied when my father purchased some gym equipment for me to use in order to stay fit. Phone calls and Face Time allowed me to stay in touch with my pals. It wasn't as wonderful as meeting them in person, but it was better than nothing. This went on for approximately a year until the government lifted the lock down and we all met in school shortly thereafter. This is an experience I will never forget.

Which sentence best supports the idea that tap water is healthier than bottled water? A) many people purchase bottled water because of its taste and convenience, or often as a safety measure when tap water is contaminated. B) Natural resources, however, are still used in manufacturing and distributing the bottled water. C) Only about 13 percent of the 29 billion bottles of water Americans consume every year are recycled and turned into products like fleece clothing, carpeting, playground equipment, and new containers and bottles. D)Tap water also has benefits that bottled water does not provide, such as being free from plastic bottle contaminants that have been linked to health problems. No laws require bottling companies to provide testing results of bottled water, but research indicates that one in four bottles of water contains tap water.

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is D. Tap water also has benefits that bottled water does not provide such as being free from plastic bottle contaminants that have been linked to health problems. No laws require bottling companies to provide testing results of bottled water but research indicates that one in four bottles of water contain tap water

The sentence that best supports the idea that tap water is healthier than bottled water is "Tap water also has benefits ......... water." Hence, Option (D) is correct.

It explicitly states that tap water is free from plastic bottle contaminants that have been linked to health problems.

It also highlights the lack of mandatory testing and transparency in the bottled water industry, indicating that one in four bottles of water contains tap water.

These points clearly establish that tap water is healthier than bottled water because it does not contain potentially harmful contaminants and is subject to stricter regulations.

Thus, option D provides direct evidence and reasoning to support the idea that tap water is a healthier choice compared to bottled water.

Kites: Birds of Glory

As a rule, raptors, or birds of prey, are among the most admired and adored birds in the world. From the California condor to the snowy owl, few birds compare to the tigers of the air: the great hunters whose beauty and skill have inspired art and literature for centuries. The most glorious feathers of the peacock or the vibrant plumage of a bunting cannot compete with the power of a peregrine falcon or the determination of an osprey. Included in this group of hunters, however, is one bird of prey that is little known but equally impressive. The kites of the world are generally smaller than most raptors, but just as astonishing in skill and grace as any other hunter of the skies.

Most people think of paper or cloth structures flown with string from the ground when the word 'kite' is used. In addition to these popular toys, kite can also refer to a type of raptor. Kites have a small head, a short beak and long narrow wings and tail. Kites can be found all over the world in mostly warm regions. Kites live on a variety of prey—from insects to small rodents or reptiles. Some kites eat only one kind of prey. Kites are generally masterful in the air and represent a group of birds that are among the most acrobatic of fliers.

Two of the most familiar kites in the Southern United States are the swallow-tailed kite and the Mississippi kite. The Mississippi kite is rather plain to look at: a light brown and gray body with a buff or white colored head. But to watch a Mississippi kite fly is to watch a ballet in the air. These raptors eat primarily flying insects, so they do most of their hunting on the wing. As you might imagine, catching flying insects requires a great deal of agility and speed. If you are lucky enough to see one in flight, you will be amazed at the quick turns, graceful moves, and speedy pursuits of this bird. Look for them above large fields, especially during the summer.

The swallow-tailed kite, also common in the South, is more easily identifiable and often seen flying over roads. With black wings and tail, white head and body, and a forked or swallow-like tail, this raptor is just as acrobatic as the Mississippi kite. Swallow-tailed kites like flying over highways in the summer as they can take advantage of the thermals, or columns of warmed air, that rise above the pavement. Once they have climbed to sufficient height, swallow-tails will glide, looking for snakes and reptiles and insects. They also eat small rodents, frogs, and other birds on occasion. Watching a swallow-tail fly is a lot like watching a gymnast perform a floor routine. Rarely flapping its wings, it uses its forked tail to make sharp turns, trace circles in the sky, or simply maintain a heading. Skilled, accomplished, and graceful, this bird is as entertaining as it is beautiful.

Both kites are known to eat while flying, unlike most other birds of prey. This practice conserves energy and allows them to hunt almost continuously. While these kites are not listed as endangered, they are rare and in some states are listed as critical. Loss of habitat is the main reason for the decline. If you are lucky enough to see one, count yourself among the few. These magnificent birds are a sight you won't soon forget.

DIRECTIONS:

What are the key differences between swallow-tail and Mississippi kites? Use details and quotations from the text to support your answer.

Answers

Answer:

The most notable difference between these two kites is the shape of the tail: the Mississippi Kite has a shorter, rectangular shaped tail, while the Swallow-tailed Kite has a very long, deeply forked tail. The White-tailed Kite is also sometimes confused with the Swallow-tailed Kite.

Write a paragraph about tearing(rip and breaking)

Answers

Answer:

Tearing is the act of breaking apart a material by force, without the aid of a cutting tool. A tear in a piece of paper, fabric, or some other similar object may be the result of the intentional effort with ones bare hands, or be accidental. Unlike a cut, which is generally on a straight or patterned line controlled by a tool such as scissors, a tear is generally uneven and, for the most part, unplanned. An exception is a tear along a perforated line, as found on a roll of toilet paper or paper towels, which has been previously partially cut, so the effort of tearing will most likely produce a straight line.

What can be inferred about Lily from this passage?

Lily had a talent for getting into trouble. Her parents were always scolding her for doing things she shouldn’t do. She loved to play in the woods behind her house. However, her father warned her to not stay in the woods after dark. He told Lily tales of dangerous animals that roamed the woods in the night. Being a curious child, Lily did not pay attention to her father’s wise words.

One evening after dinner, Lily sneaked out of the house and went exploring in the dark woods. Armed with a flashlight, Lily was determined to see for herself these scary creatures her father described. She had never been in the woods at night. It was a strange place indeed. The sounds were unfamiliar to her. Suddenly, she heard a low growling sound. It sounded similar to the sound her dog, Toby, made when he was angry. Slowly, she scanned the woods with her flashlight. She saw a pair of glowing eyes that seemed to be coming closer to her. Lily became frightened. Forgetting her exploration, she ran home as fast as she could. Once out of the woods, Lily calmed herself down. She realized that her father was right. It was too dangerous to be in the woods after dark. Lily learned that being stubborn isn’t always a good thing.

Answer:

Smart lad, to slip betimes away

From fields where glory does not stay,

And early though the laurel grows

It withers quicker than the rose.

Explanation:

A. E. Housman's elegy "To an Athlete Dying Young" talks of the mortality of man and how everything is insignificant in front of death. The poem deals with the themes of victory, death, transience, youth, etc.

From the first four stanzas of the poem, the third stanza emphasizes temporary fame and prestige. In this stanza, the speaker reveals how "glory does not stay" and "though the laurel grows, it withers quicker than the rose." These two lines seem to signal the temporary nature of fame and prestige, which all seem insignificant and useless when a person dies.

Here is a scatter plot of weight vs. age for different Dobermans. The model, represented by
y = 2.45x + 1.22, is graphed with the scatter plot. Here, x represents age in weeks, and y
represents weight in pounds.

Answers

Answer:

The slope means that the Doberman expect to gain 2.45 pounds per week during their first 25 weeks.

A newborn Doberman would be expected to weigh 1.22 pounds.

Explanation:

Scatter plots are used to get the relationships between variables through the used  of dots to replace variables. The horizontal and vertical axis value is used to indicate the position for each dot.

A linear relationship can exist between the data points in a scatter plot if a straight line fits through the data comfortably. If the slope of the line is positive then there is a positive correlation between the variables.

The equation of a linear function is:

y = mx + b;

where m is the slope and b is the y intercept

Given that x represents age in weeks, and y  represents weight in pounds. The model can be represented by a straight line with a formula:

y = 2.45x + 1.22,

The slope of the line is 2.45, hence the Doberman gains weight of 2.45 pounds per week.

The y intercept is 1.22, that means at 0 weeks (new born Doberman), the weight of a new born Doberman is 1.22 pounds

The slope means that the Doberman expect to gain 2.45 pounds per week during their first 25 weeks.

A newborn Doberman would be expected to weigh 1.22 pounds.

Parallel structure is the use of words, phrases, or sentences side by side and making them appear similar in form or structure.

She had also worried that she would continue to find chores that needed doing, plants that needed help, right up until the minute she left today. She hated unfinished things. She hated details not being tended to.The sun had been above the trees and blasting the greenhouse for a good hour now. Jilly listened for the familiar whirr of the automatic vents opening. When the greenhouse reached a certain temperature, the vents would open automatically. The vents would have a cooling effect for an hour or so, and then no amount of breeze would put a dent in the heat. Mrs. T. often claimed Jilly must be part reptile as she was able to work longer in the greenhouse than anyone else. The heat just didn't bother her. In fact, Jilly often looked forward to the warmth of the greenhouse and feeling the heat seep into her bones. It felt good to her, but she understood others who found it hard to breathe in 100 degree temperatures.Jilly heard the greenhouse door bang, and looked up from her ferns to see Mrs. T. walking down the aisle with a tray of young plants. Mums, Jilly supposed, the flowers everyone wants for fall. She had helped Mrs. T. take cuttings and plant the small stems in new pots. They were doing nicely from the look of things."We will keep these in here for now," said Mrs. T. "They are getting too much rain outside."It had been a rainy couple of days. Jilly knew, as well as anyone, that overwatering could kill potted plants quickly."Do you remember when I overwatered those mint plants?" Jilly asked Mrs. T."I used to think no one could kill a mint plant," Mrs. T. said, laughing."Well I am full of surprises, apparently," Jilly replied. Jilly remembered the sad green plants that just kept looking more and more wilted no matter how much water she gave them. It was a beginner's mistake, and Jilly had been so embarrassed for making it."That you are," replied Mrs. T. "But I know you learned a lesson you won't ever forget.""Of course. Herbs like their roots damp, not flooded," Jilly answered."Well that is not the lesson I was thinking of," Mrs. T. said.Jilly wondered for a minute what the lesson could be. She straightened the rows of geraniums in front of her, picking up one or two to check for aphids under the leaves. It had been a summer full of lessons, some especially hard for a girl who thought she knew a lot about plants. She breathed deeply the warm, humid air. She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or with plants. She had come to understand this over the summer-her need to be around growing things was huge."I'm not sure, Mrs. T." she said, "I've learned so much this summer. I couldn't possibly say what you are thinking.""You did learn many lessons, Jilly. You knew so much when you started. You've gone farther than any other assistants I've had. I will miss you.""And I will miss you," Jilly replied. "Thank you for the opportunity and the job." Jilly watched Mrs. T. put the tray of mums down on the center row of tables. Wearing her familiar brown apron, Mrs. T. looked just as she had on Jilly's first day."My pleasure, of course, dear," Mrs. T. replied. "My hope for you, as for all my assistants over the years, is that you will learn as much about yourself as you do about growing plants."Recalling her thoughts all morning, about what she enjoyed about her summer job, Jilly realized she knew much more than just how to not drown the mint.Read this line from the narrative:Jilly moved down the tables, tucking a stray hair behind her ear with a gloved and already dirty hand. What is the main purpose of this sentence in the story?
