Can a character be both tragic and heroic at the same
time? If so, in what ways?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer: This is called a tragic hero. Someone who is doomed to die, yet as a good person. For example: Hamilton was a tragic hero, he was intellectual, intelligent, and truly a writer, however he knew this about himself and became somewhat arrogant and conceded, his will to prove he was the best in end was his downfall. Another example was John Proctor in The Crucible, had he admitted he was in league with witches and the devil he would be granted his life, however hiding true to his faith and loyalty to God, he never once allowed himself to lie. Knowing his life maybe spared, but his soul forever tainted in the eyes of God. A tragic hero is a person of good heart and soul, who allows their flaws to get the best of them. Proctors flaw was his honesty at all costs, even the cost of his life.

In this excerpt from Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which sentence shows that the narrator is experiencing an internal conflict about right versus wrong?
Mornings before daylight I slipped into cornfields and borrowed a watermelon, or a mushmelon, or a punkin, or some new corn, or things of that kind. Pap always said it warn't no harm to borrow things if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow said it warn't anything but a soft name for stealing, and no decent body would do it. Jim said he reckoned the widow was partly right and pap was partly right; so the best way would be for us to pick out two or three things from the list and say we wouldn't borrow them any more—then he reckoned it wouldn't be no harm to borrow the others. So we talked it over all one night, drifting along down the river, trying to make up our minds whether to drop the watermelons, or the cantaloupes, or the mush melons, or what. But towards daylight we got it all settled satisfactory, and concluded to drop crabapples and p'simmons. We warn't feeling just right before that, but it was all comfortable now. I was glad the way it come out, too, because crabapples ain't ever good, and the p'simmons wouldn't be ripe for two or three months yet.

Answer:

Its about common sense

“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason” is a common sense.

What is quote?

Quote is defined as the speaking or writing out loud of a sentence, phrase, or paragraph from a speech or book. The term "quote" refers to a written offer from a seller to a customer of goods or services at a specific price and under specific conditions.

A long practice of not thinking something wrong gives it a surface impression of being right and first produces a tremendous uproar in defense of custom, according to Thomas Paine's 1776 essay "Common Sense," which offered advice to the colonists. In order to start the American Revolution, Paine had to quit a long-standing habit.

Thus, “A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason” is a common sense.

Answers

The correct answer is D. Select a plant from the Western Garden Book. Next, dig a hole in the backyard using a shovel.

Explanation

In most texts, the author usually refers to a sentence or detail previously mentioned. This technique allows the author to connect ideas and helps the reader to better follow the text. This technique is used in sentences A, B, and C. However, it is no used in sentence D because the author explains the reader should select a plan and after this, the reader should dig a hole. This means, the idea of the plan is mentioned only once and it is not repeated. So, the correct answer is D. Select a plant from the Western Garden Book. Next, dig a hole in the backyard using a shovel.

Read this passage from "The American Dream."

One of the first things we notice in this dream is an amazing universalism. It does not say some men, but it says all men. It does not say all white men, but it says all men, which includes black men. It does not say all Gentiles, but it says all men, which includes Jews. It does not say all Protestants, but it says all men, which includes Catholics.

Which is the most likely reason that the speaker repeats the word “men” in the passage?

“Men” functions as a keyword that helps create a rhythm.
“Men” emphasizes the subject the speaker is interested in discussing.
“Men” functions as a key point in the speaker’s logical argument.
“Men” emphasizes the differences the speaker wants to show.

Answers

Answer: A. “Men” functions as a keyword that helps create a rhythm.

Explanation:

The most likely reason that the speaker repeats the word “men” in the passage is because “Men” functions as a keyword that helps create a rhythm.

"Men" doesn't emphasize the subject that the speaker is interested in discussing nor does it functions as an important point in the speaker’s logical argument, rather it is vital for the rhythm in the passage to be created.
