Based on lines 1 through 29 in "Excerpt from Little Cricket," how are Thek's and Grandfather's points of view about living in America different?

Answers

Answer 1

Hello. You did not submit the excerpt to which this question refers, which makes it impossible for it to be answered. However, using the full context of "Little Cricket" I'll show you how Thek and his grandfather's views are on America. I hope this answer can help you.

Thek has a more positive view of America than his grandfather. For Thek, America is a good place to live and settle down. He believes America is the land of possibilities and is ready to explore them all. He also loves how America has electricity, running water, taxis, meters and many other elements that he didn't have in his homeland. This vision is very different from the way his grandfather sees America. For Thek's grandfather, America is a dirty, noisy and dull place. He misses the nature and the outdoors that he had access to in Laos, he misses being able to see the mountains and eat delicious food, made at home with great care and affection.

"Little Cricket" tells the story of the Vang family, who had a peaceful life in Laos, even with few resources, but had their whole life turned upside down after the Vietnam War and the move to the USA.

What is a reflective essay?

An informative examination of a significant person, event, or idea is the focus of a reflective essay, which usually includes the author's own reflection on their own experiences or viewpoints.

A reflective essay, as opposed to a historical event essay, would concentrate on the author's feelings and thoughts about the event and how it has affected them.

An essay that is descriptive, as opposed to one that is reflective of the author's experiences or worldview, would concentrate on describing a subject in great detail.

A reflective essay is a style of writing which involves observation and self-reflection, and it frequently concentrates on a particular occasion, figure, or concept. Therefore, option D is appropriate.

Answer

A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false.
An opinion is an expression of a person’s feelings that cannot be proven. Opinions can be based on facts or emotions and sometimes they are meant to deliberately mislead others. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the author’s purpose and choice of language. Sometimes, the author lets the facts speak for themselves.

The following is an example of a fact:
• With fewer cars on the road, there would be less air pollution and traffic noise;
therefore, the use of mass transportation should be encouraged.
Sometimes the author may use descriptive language to appeal to your emotions and sway your thinking. The following is an example of an opinion:
• Do you like looking at a smoggy view from a congested highway? How do you feel about fighting road hugs and bumper to bumper traffic everyday? Mass transportation is the solution to all these problems.

Emotional language is neither right nor wrong, but the way in which it is used can be positive or negative; it is up to you to make reasonable judgement about the material you are reading and to draw your own conclusion.

Therefore, when you read, it is important to judge facts and opinions carefully in order to come to the right conclusion. Ask yourself, “are the facts reliable?” or “are the opinions based on the facts?” Once you answer these questions, you may be on the right track for finding and sticking to the facts; you be the judge.

Based on paragraphs 18-20 of the article, what is one reason that Maathai's
movement was successful?

A. She recognized the frustration of people on both sides of a conflict.

B. She followed established rules despite the impatience of the public.

C. She continued to create awareness despite efforts by others to
intimidate her.

D. She addressed the concerns of others through her trust in the
democratic process.

18. Maathai and the Green Belt Movement led high-profile
campaigns to save Kenya's forests and green spaces. In 1991, for
instance, the movement saved Nairobi's Uhuru Park from an
enormous high-rise to be built by the ruling party. The dictatorship was
still strong, and not amused. For their boldness, Maathai and Green
Belt colleagues were subjected to stints in jail and harassment,
including death threats. Many nights, Maathai stayed in safe houses..

19 And yet, she was not put off. "It is as clear as day. You cannot
protect the environment if you do not have democratic governance [or]
democratic space," she says.

20 In 1992, partly as a result of Maathai's activism, Kenya legalized
opposition political parties. In subsequent years, the regime, while still
corrupt and cantankerous, showed signs of cracking. After a series of
violent confrontations with Maathai and the Green Belt Movement
over Karura Forest in 1999, the regime abandoned its illegal
development plans. The forest stands today, vast and green, on the
edge of Nairobi's throbbing streets.

In American Born Chinese, the main characters, the Monkey King, Danny, and
Jin Wang have conflict because they
A. are stubborn and unwilling to change.
B. try to be something they're not.
C. do not get along well with other people.
D. are unfamiliar with their cultural backgrounds.

Answers

Answer:

B. Try to be something they're not.

Explanation:

Gene Luen Yang's "American Born Chinese" is a graphic novel that revolves around the issue of trying to fit in with the majority despite one's different background. The novel follows the lives of young Chinese children in their attempts and desire to fit into the American culture of their adopted country.

The main characters Danny, the Monkey King, and Jin Wang all faced conflicts in their lives because of their desire to blend in and fit into the lifestyle and culture of their surroundings. Despite their Chinese background and heritage, Danny and Jin Wang felt the need to be 'equal' with the American kids, while the Monkey King also tried to fit in with the other gods. All the three characters had problems accepting their true self, which resulted in the conflicts of trying to be something they're not.

Thus, the correct answer is option B.

Directions: Choose the option that maintains parallel structure in the sentence.
1. When Delores realized that her father had made lima beans and rice for dinner, she
claimed to feel nauseous, and excused herself from the table. The bag of stale popcorn in her
room would tide her over until breakfast.
A clutched her stomach
B. was clutching her stomach
C. did clutch her stomach

Answers

Answer:

A. Clutched her stomach.

Explanation:

Parallel structure refers to the use of a similar word patterns in a sentence. In other words, this means that the tense or word form used is the same in a sentence.

In the given sentence, the verb used is in the simple past tense. So, the verb structure all throughout the sentence will remain in that form, meaning the verbs used will all be in the same form.

So, the sentence with parallel structure will become-

When Delores realized that her father had made lima beans and rice for dinner, she claimed to feel nauseous, clutched her stomach, and excused herself from the table. The bag of stale popcorn in her room would tide her over until breakfast.

The parallelism is seen in the words "realized, claimed, clutched, excused".

Therefore, the option that will maintain parallel structure in the sentence will be option A.
