Why do you think there is great conflicts between the ideas of nationality and ethnicities across the world?

During WW2, when people like ethnic Germans, now living in Poland were persecuted after the country capitulated to Germany. Another example is the Bosnian war where countless people were attacked from either side and based of their nationality, despite sharing ethnicities.
