President Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau at 9:30 am, in Washington, D.C. less than four months into Garfield's term as the 20th President of the United States. Garfield died eleven weeks later on September 19, 1881. His Vice President, Chester A. Arthur, succeeded Garfield as President.
One factor that encouraged president Arthur to pursue the civil service reform was the fact that President Garfield was shot by a crazed office seeker who thought he was owed a government job due to his support for Garfield in the election.
The assassination of James A. Garfield made it possible for the new president and longtime political spoilsman, Chester Arthur, to combat the patronage system's excesses.

In your own words, summarize how the Korean War began.

Did the Korean War lead to the unifying of North and South Korea? Explain.

Answers

Answer:

The Korean War (1950-1953) began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea. As Kim Il-sung's North Korean army, armed with Soviet tanks, quickly overran South Korea, the United States came to South Korea's aid. This Chinese army attacked the US/UN/ROK forces.

Korean reunification refers to the potential reunification of North Korea and South Korea into a single Korean sovereign state. The process towards reunification was started by the June 15th North–South Joint Declaration in June 2000, and was reaffirmed by the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula in April 2018, and the joint statement of the United States President Donald Trump and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un at the Singapore Summit in June 2018. In the Panmunjom Declaration, the two countries agreed to work towards a peaceful reunification of Korea in the future.

Prior to World War I and Japan's annexation of Korea (1910-1945), all of Korea had been unified as a single state for centuries, known previously as the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and the last unified state, the Korean Empire. After World War II in 1945 and beginning in the Cold War (1947-1991), Korea was divided into two countries along the 38th parallel (now the Korean Demilitarized Zone) in 1948. North Korea was administered by the Soviet Union in the years immediately following the war, with South Korea being managed by the United States. In 1950, North Korea invaded the South, beginning the Korean War, which ended in stalemate in 1953. Even after the end of the Korean War, reunification proved a challenge as the two countries became increasingly diverged at a steady pace. However, in the late 2010s, relations between North and South Korea warmed somewhat, beginning with North Korea's participation at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, South Korea. In 2019, South Korean president Moon Jae-in proposed reunification of the two divided states in the Korean peninsula by 2045.

Read the lyrics of the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the lord,
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He hath loosed his fateful lightning
of His terrible swift sword,
His truth is marching on

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

I have seen Him in the watch fires
of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar
in the evening dews and damps,
I can read his righteous sentence
in the dim and daring lamps,
His day is marching on

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

I have read a fiery Gospel
writ in burnished rows of steel,
"As ye deal with My contemners
so with you My grace shall deal,"
Let the Hero born of woman
crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

He has sounded forth the trumpet
that shall never call retreat,
He is sitting out the hearts of men
before His judgment seat,
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him!
Be jubilant, my feet,
Our God is marching on

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

During Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, he inspired people with his heartfelt speeches and unbreakable determination.  He inspired African Americans to fight for their rights through a less aggressive means.  Without him, we would still be in the save segregated situation as it was back then.  He was a powerful leader of the Civil Rights Movement.  He used peaceful tactics to put an end to the discrimination, and didn’t phase when the government tried to suppress him or when he faced violence from others against his actions.  Out of all his memorable quotes and messages he left us, one quote stands apart from the rest, written in a prison cell.  “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” a quote with influential meaning.

A Growing Nation

After the American Revolution, the newly formed United States realized that it lacked room to grow. The states created in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 were limited in size. As the population increased, more people were competing for the same amount of land. Consequently, land became more expensive, and overcrowding became an issue. The thirteen states were bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the territories of other nations. If the United States was going to have a future, it needed to increase its territory.

President Thomas Jefferson believed that for Americans to be virtuous and free, they needed to farm land. He wanted to expand westward to create more farmland. Jefferson also wanted to obtain the Port of New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River so farmers could easily transport their goods. He facilitated the purchase of New Orleans and the rest of the French territory from France in 1803 for $15 million. This new land was called the Louisiana Territory and stretched partway across the continent. It was the first step in expanding the United States.

The purchase of the Louisiana Territory led to a pattern of westward expansion through payment, negotiations, and conflict. The United States purchased Florida from Spain with the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1821. Instead of paying Spain a set amount, the United States would pay the $5 million Americans claimed were owed to them by Spain. After Texas declared independence from Mexico, it was annexed by the United States and became an official state in 1845. Another land controversy occurred between Great Britain and the United States, as both countries claimed the Oregon region. The dispute was settled in the 1846 Oregon Treaty, which separated the countries by the line of the 49th parallel. Mexico refused to let the United States buy California and New Mexico, so the two countries eventually went to war. Because the Americans won the war, the United States was able to buy lands in the Southwest in 1848. The United States paid Mexico $10 million for an area of land in the Southwest in the 1853 Gadsden Purchase, stretching its borders from sea to sea.
