Answer:

A. When two clauses are joined by a semicolon, they can usually be separated into two sentences.

Explanation:

A semicolon (;) is used to join  two independent sentences into one written sentence. This semicolon is used when the two sentences are seen to be closely related to be separated by the use of a full stop. Also, it is used when there is no connecting word that require the use of comma.

But in actual sense, a semicolon can be replaced by a full stop thereby forming two different sentences.

The two clauses joined by a semicolon can be separated into two sentences.

By refusing to cross the bridge, Black Beauty saves the lives of John and Squire Gordon and this changes the course of history.

Explanation:

John and Squire Gordon choose Black Beauty as the horse that will take them on a very long trip on a rainy day. The storm, during the trip gets stronger and stronger, but Black is a very strong horse, committed and fearless and does not fear the rain. However, at one point, Black refuses to cross a bridge, John and Squire Gordon are indignant and give the horse several lashes, which remain firm in their refusal to cross the fountain. This is an important moment in history, which shows how Black is loyal and intelligent, because the river water, influenced by the storm, overcame the source and is drowning all the men and horses that they tried to cross. THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

What was the main problem with relying on nature to start a flame?
Fire could only be collected with "sticks of wood" that were hard to find.
Fire had to be "carefully guarded," requiring someone to stay behind from hunting.
Fire had to be "carried to the home," which could be dangerous and awkward.
Fire was likely hard to find, requiring a "long journey and a deal of trouble."

Answers

Answer:

The main problem with relying on nature to start a flame was that Fire was likely hard to find, requiring a "long journey and a deal of trouble."

Explanation:

If nature started a fire, the people would have to carry that fire to the place where they lived at that time and guard it as much as they could. These journeys were sometimes long and dangerous and it was not a reliable way of procuring fire.

JOHN:
I loved Animal Farm. I thought it was a really great
critique of the way patriotism blinds people to the
abuses committed in their names by their leaders. They
think they are doing their patriotic duty, but they are
being taken advantage of.
KARLIN:
I didn't get that at all. I thought it was making a very
specific point about the Cold War.
LASHON:
I think it's speaking more generally about the way
people in power abuse those under them. Are you
saying, Karlin, that you don't think it's still relevant today
just because the Cold War is over?
KARLIN:
I think it can still be relevant, but its primary point is
about the Soviet Union. Look at the class structure of
the book, with the absolute power of those in charge,
and the way the animals just agree to work extra for
less food. They're naïve in the same way Orwell was
saying Soviet citizens were. Don't you think?
MARTA:
I agree that he was making that point, but I think you
have to look more broadly too. His questioning of
power structures was really radical. You can even apply
his ideas to our own society, with the way people vote
against their own interests because their leaders
persuade them to do it. Look at your own government,
Orwell was saying. That's why the book is so powerful.

Student Karlin is most clearly using evidence to support his opinion in this discussion.

What Karlin is referring to?

Karlin is referring to the class structure in the book, with the absolute power of those in charge and the way the animals agree to work extra for less food, to support his argument that Orwell was specifically making a point about the Soviet Union.

In this discussion, all four students are expressing their opinions about the novel "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. However, the question asks which student is most clearly using evidence to support their opinion. Based on the conversation, it appears that Marta is the one who is most clearly using evidence to support her opinion.

Marta mentions how Orwell's questioning of power structures in the novel was radical and how it can be applied to our own society, with examples of people voting against their own interests because their leaders persuade them to do so.

Marta's argument is supported by evidence from the novel and also by real-world examples, which make her opinion more convincing. While the other students also express their opinions about the novel, they do not provide as much evidence to support their arguments as Marta does.

Answer:

Roosevelt appeals to the emotions of the audience by referring to Hitler’s rise to power and the tragic consequences of his government. Roosevelt appeals to the logic of the audience by noting that the interests of the people are not considered in a one-party government. Roosevelt appeals to the logic of the audience by explaining reasons why the amendment would allow the Soviets to ignore a human right.

In this excerpt, Eleanor Roosevelt explains why a compromise on human rights issues is often equivalent to nullifying the protection. She does this by first describing an issue in which compromising (with the Soviets) would eliminate the protection of the right. She also appeals to the logic of the listeners when she explains that in one-party systems, the rights of citizens are often ignored. Finally, she emphasizes this fact by reminding the reader of Hitler's regime and its consequences.
